Using one length of wood cut only on right angles, the form of this stool was inspired by a book.
Given a 10" x 60" length of 1" poplar, I created a four-board reading stool. Included are orthographic component / orthographic assembly / isometric assembly draftings as well as photos of the most informative 1/4 scale sketch models, a full scale prototype, and the final stool.
Inspired by Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited, I emphasized the book's main themes (religion and class) in my design. For example, to depict the division among the titled nobility, upper class, and middle class, I created a visual hierarchy, varying the heights of the boards.
